So what does the phrase “Cry Me a River” mean and why am I putting a topic on it?

The reason behind the topic is actually a very simple one. All three of us were watching our Ice Age 2: The Meltdown DVD movie to pass the time as the thunderstorm raged overhead. I was enjoying the activities of my three favorite characters in the movie being Scrat, Crash & Eddie. During a bit of the dialogue, either Crash or Eddie said “Cry me a river.” Since that was the first time I noticed the phrase, I asked Goryo what it meant.

‘Cry me a river’ has two meanings.

The first meaning is a literal meaning or to cry so much that your tears keep streaming down your face almost like a river. You can think of when a toddler gets a booboo, overreacts and just starts crying very hard letting the whole world around them that something is wrong. That would be what it is referring to indirectly.

The real meaning comes in how it is said. The phrase is a form of sarcasm or being rude. Sometimes, it is called for. When a person complains about a topic or whines about a small thing, someone who gets annoyed with the whining could turn around and say ‘cry me a river.’

If they say that to a person, they are meaning the person is complaining and whining just like a toddler who overreacts to a minor injury or fright. This is a bit more advanced way of saying “baby” “wimp” or “wuss”.
