Geeks R Us

Anyone who reads my blog knows that it is not for the weak hearted individuals in regards to technology. True, technology is not my only topic I blog about but it is a passion of mine so I will.

In the real world, I catch a lot of teasing from my hubby for not following directions especially those on the back of a box of food. But put me in front of a computer trying to troubleshoot it, run a diagnostic, build a website or any other tech geek item that does not include actually computer programming and you’ll see me pouring over the directions to make the absolute best decision.

So yes, I’ll read directions for assembling a website but not for assembling our evening meal. My bad and I promise to improve.

However, assembling a website is like assembling a recipe in a way. You need to allocate your budget for the base ingredients necessary. If you want to make a chicken based dish, you need the chicken first. If you want to make a blog or run a forum, you need to figure out your web hosting requirements with the assistance of the best company that fits your needs.

Perhaps you wish to run a website that doubles as a recipe database for Philippine recipes in a limited budget. You will need to know your budget limitations and the expectations of traffic and required storage space so you can use the link above to narrow down which web hosting option is for you.

It really is just like cooking. You need to select what you are going to do then assemble all of the ingredients. Now if my attempts at lunch can turn out just as well as my web sites, then my hubby will have a happy tummy too.

What About the Data Recovery

The time is coming near when we will have to replace my hubby’s computer. Like everything else of his, it is old. No, it isn’t 20 years old like some of his t-shirts but it is nearing the end of its lifecycle.

As such, we are growing a bit more concerned each day with the topic of data recovery if the computer should crash for the last time. He runs his own blog and does a lot of other work as well so if it is lost, that would set him behind by quite a bit.

Projecting that out to our eventual needs as we grow a home-based business and knowing how damaging it can be for a full blown business (or even just the sales rep), having resources ready for a guaranteed hard drive recovery is a must.

I do not need to walk you through the awful sound of your hard drive clicking. Most of us have been there and dealt with it. If you were lucky, you had already backed up all of your files. If you were incredibly unlucky, you could see your hard drive and computer crash just as you are about to show off a project to those who you bought it from.

Let me take a little time out and tell you a true story that last line is based on. I was busy doing my job all dressed up nice and fancy as the client was in the office. All had to be on their best behavior and in their best attire to impress the client. My manager had the great fortune of giving a presentation to the client team. Her presentation was on her computer which they had gathered around to watch. At that exact time, her computer died. Yes, the computer was purchased from their company and died right in front of their eyes. To my manager’s credit, she did the best she could to save face. As for the data recovery, I am not certain if they ever recovered that presentation.

There is one other form of data recovery that is important in large business, home grown business and more. It is called RAID data recovery. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks or in layman’s terms a series of storage devices that run some core functions. Due to the nature of RAID, heat, connections and dust play a large part in the health of the RAID. I strongly advise clicking on the link to learn more.

Normally the words raid, heat and connections would be scary words to an illegal immigrant. But all of us follow the law so we only need to worry about the computers.

A Little Biased But…

Okay, anyone reading my blog knows that I am a computer nerd. I like my computers, HTML code, networking, increasing visibility and all that. So yes, this is a post about technology and computers.

But for all the joy I have of doing work on a computer, it does not come close to the joy of working on the computer with the comfort of sitting on our comfy recliner sofa. You can melt into it.

Obviously, that requires me to do my work on a laptop computer. So I will give you all the instructions on which laptop is the best in my humble opinion. My laptop of choice happens to be the one I got for very little upfront money.

So instead of making certain I sit in another office chair while I tweak my blog, I can do it in the comfort of our couch.

Ah, the joys of a laptop. Which one will you select?
