What I Do and Don’t Miss About the Philippines Part I

Okay, it has been a while since I’ve been able to visit home so this may be a touch of homesickness but hey it is my blog.

This is my list of things I do miss from the Philippines:

1) Mango shakes made with the sweetest mangoes in the world – Those grown in
    the   Phils.

2) I miss my Lola and my nanay’s pinakbet and many other recipes you just can’t get the
    ingredients for here.

3) I miss the grilled fresh tuna. The canned tuna here just doesn’t do it for me.

4) Jollibee’s (Sikat pinoy!)

5) Eating with my hands and it being considered normal.

6) Using the walis tingting o tambo (tama ba?) to clean the inside and outside of the    house.   Here it is the vacuum cleaners and fabricated brooms.

7) Using the coconut scrub to polish wooden floors instead of another power tool that is almost  the size I am.

8 ) Doing the laundry with the other women in public so you can have a place to chat while   working. (Tsismisan kamo? Haha!)

9) Other Filipinas and Filipinos in the area to even talk with. It is tough when the main person   from your culture is just yourself. There may be others around but they are just as busy in   this rat race here.

10) Taking a Jeepney or Tricycle which you couldn’t do here or you’d freeze your face off.

11) Knowing you could take a Jeepney ride if you lose or lost your license or just don’t feel like   watching $40 or more go in your gas tank.

12) I miss being able to blend in. Not just in the crowd but also with co-workers and extended   family. Some say I should adapt to life here in the USA. I’m sorry but I’m not a wimp and a   whiner like many here. I am from a 3rd world country. I do know what a hard life full of hard   work is. I cannot be a fake just to blend in with others being fakes. (Hindi po ako plastic!)

13) Seeing the results of a day’s worth of work versus just being another cog in the business  machine.

14) The celebration of Christmas on December 25th when the entire community celebrates the   day together and it being about family, friends and not just another hunk of plastic bought   from a store or holding “Christmas” whenever you feel it best fits into your schedule. (Kahit  walang regalo, Masaya pa rin!)

to be continued…
