Life Here & There
4 Comments This Crazy World We Live In
There are some things in this life that just leave me wondering why. So I will share one of those with you. I really have no explanation for this so I’m open to hearing why you think it is. Here are some observations I have made.
In the Philippines on the island of Mindanao, a fair portion of the women purchase products to lighten the color of their skin. Some say this is to enhance their beauty. (komersyal sa TV!) Some say this is to be more like the westerners or Pinoy celebrities. I have tried these products once but stopped. (wah epek- pinoy kasi hehe!) I really never saw the point in it. Perhaps I’m missing something.
Before I came to the USA to be with my hubby, I spent a fair portion of time chatting on IM with people from all over the globe. I was curious to what life was like where they lived. In one IM chat with a lady from the USA, she shared a detail that floored me. I had no idea how to respond outside of some polite minor change of topic talk.
The statement she made was “I wish I could have a tan like yours.” She was a Caucasian lady. I didn’t have the heart to say she couldn’t because her natural skin color is very light and mine is like any other Filipino or Asian lady. At least her question beats a question my sister-in-law asked me once: “How much snow do you get there (in Gensan)?”
Since I moved here, I’ve made another observation. Many women try to layout in the sun to get a tan or go to a tanning salon to get their skin darker. Some women though avoid the sun and they end up looking much better when they are older than the ones who get the tan.
So here is the question I have for all of you to think about and try and answer. I do not know the answer. Why do Filipinos try to lighten their skin to look like the Caucasian women from the West while the Caucasian women try to darken their skin to look like the Filipinos before they lightened their skin?
Thank you,

Hi Ana, I like your posts in this new home of yours (I will update your addie in my links I promise), mas frequent pa.
I never had an issue with my skin color maybe because my mom (who is relatively fair for a filipina) would oftentimes wish she had my morena complexion. She said it looks healthier. I know Tom loves a darker colored skin kaya before I came to the US I tanned myself to the max. Eh di gandang ganda siya sa akin when I arrived haha pero my friends in the Philippines kept asking me why I was getting so dark haha.
Hope the snow stops na haha
It all goes back to cows and grasses and pastures. how it’s always greener on the other side.
