Life Here & There
5 Comments Taste Of Home vs. the Taste Buds of Here
Blog hopping brought me to this post as I waved my hubby over so we could view Manong Ken’s Carinderia’s. There are several pictures of dishes that I just have not had for quite a while. The main reasons why I haven’t are we do not have the ingredients readily available in Wisconsin and my skills in the kitchen need help. This post is comparing my (Filipino) reaction to the pictures of the dishes and my hubby’s (American) reaction to the dishes.
The first set of photos can be found in the entry labeled Street Food. Here is one of the pictures:

This picture had me licking my lips thinking of when I’ll get to taste this food again. My husband was suspicious of what the food looked like. I confirmed that it is prepared chicken and pig internal organs and intestines on a stick. My tummy started rumbling. He started to turn green.
Next up is his post on Seafood Saute. Here is the main picture from it:

This had my mouth watering. Oh how I miss eating such delicious food. My hubby was identifying the squid, shrimp, the claws and tentacles. I wish I could have reached out with a fork to eat some. He reached out to a bottle of antacids to calm his now upset stomach.
We finally came to a little bit of common ground on the entry of Pictures from a baby shower.
All of the photos were of food I would gladly dive in and eat. It has been a long time. The Arroz la Valenciana is something I miss. My hubby noted the small sea creatures in it and declared it something he would rather miss.
The Chop Suey with itlong ng pugo was going okay until he realized those were quail eggs. First, he thought they were eyeballs from some animal. I might be able to get him to eat this dish but without the quail eggs. If he’s there when this full dish is served, I know I’ll get to shift to using Bisaya with my family and tease him without his knowing it.
Kare-Kare was up next and by now his stomach was not feeling good and he was skeptical of anything that looked like it could be a squid or an octopus. Can I get him to eat kare-kare? Maybe but it can take some work.
Next, there were two dishes that he will eat with some conditions. The first was Kung pao chicken which he has eaten in the past. Now I love the spices and the hotter the better. He is leery about eating it as he needs to run for the water. He’s doing better but spicy is not his thing. He likes the sour foods.
There finally was one thing he would definitely eat provided there were no shrimp or tentacles in it.
Yes, he will gladly eat the “ubiquituous pancit noodles”. I’ve got my work cut out for me. *hayyy sarap!*

Thank you,
Anah

Len, soon, very very soon you will be tasting streetfood, well, here in gensan, it’s really cheaper, and i will soon be sending you to places you have not seen before you went there, there are a lot of changes in gensan, you’ll see them when you get here, and you will love that barbeque from our favorite: kanto grill, may mas bago na ngayon though, and i am sure you will like it there.

Anah, thanks so much for discussing my blog in your blog. I found your post so endearing and funny. Ganoon talaga ang cross-cultural relationships/marriages, take and give, give and take. There is one dish that I am sure that your husband would love: adobo. Easy to make … and delicious (especially that you mentioned he like sour taste).
BTW, since you live in Wisconsin, kung bumisita kayo sa Chicago – give me a holler – I can take you to Filipino restaurants and also to stores so you can stock up with Pinoy stuff. Also, the seafood saute ingredients are pre-mixed – from Costco! May Costco naman diyan sa Wisconsin.
