Thank you Mamapajamas, busby and Sheng for the comments.

Mama p, your account is something to be expected here unfortunately. It does bring to mind one of the best jokes regarding attorneys.

"What do you get when you line up all of the attorneys head to foot around the Equator?"

Answer:

"A better and more peaceful world." (Especially when you factor in the vast majority of the equator runs over oceans....)

I had a friend a few years back who had a son in a private school. The son broke his leg (in a bicycle accident not involving the school), and was hobbling around on crutches for a number of weeks.

My friend was APPROACHED by the ACLU, who wanted her to sue the school to install wheelchair ramps to help him negotiate the area.

I happened to be there when they called upon her. She chewed them up one side and down the other, and threatened to sue THEM (she had no case against them, but she made her viewpoint loud and clear!). They definitely picked the wrong person to approach. She pointed out to them that one of the bad things about breaking a leg was that one had problems getting around. It was best for the child to LEARN HOW to get around without assistance... and maybe to be more careful in the future so he didn't break his leg again.

My point on this story is that there ARE LAWYERS out there who will approach otherwise sensible people and con them into starting a trivial lawsuit with the promise of money--never mind that the lawyer would get most of it. In the case of my friend, she didn't bite because her son was going to a private school that was not subject to federal disability laws. The attempt to shake down the school went down like a lead balloon. The whole point of sending her son to a private school was to keep the feds out of his education.

There the lawyer's job taking part mostly. We the ordinary people think there is no law case from our idiotry. The lawyers don't. Every silly thing bring bad to us is a case for them, especially when it's involving 'big fish' companies.
