How Are Car Accidents Resolved Part I

In the Philippines, a car accident, especially a bad one, is nothing but expensive. Either you have the money for your own car repairs and medical bills or you are sunk. Car insurance is optional and commonly used by well known people or someone who can afford it and wanted to protect their investment etc.

If the person who hit you has a reputation to protect and money, then you might have your car repair and medical bills covered. Should you take a chance on someone and let them drive your car, you may be completely without a car at your expense. In a way, this encourages responsible driving as the bill is all yours. So naturally, you are concerned about the expense of being irresponsible. You can only hope the other drivers realize the same and drive responsibly as well.

Here in the USA, throw out all that you knew about driving and the rules and start over. Everyone is required to have car insurance just in case of an accident. As I’ve written before, the laws are strict and depend on the State you live in. But what happens when there is an accident and especially a bad one?

The car insurance companies get involved. They determine what percentage fault lies with who based on the police reports. From that, a check is often cut to the victim for the approximate current value of his vehicle. If it doesn’t match what you still have left on the loan, that isn’t their problem.

Then they will also cover the reasonable medical expenses starting with a diagnosis and basic treatment. Since the most common injury is whiplash, a diagnosis to rule out any broken bones, internal damage or a concussion is needed.

to be continued….

  • hey Anah! How are you? Very nice post about car accidents. In the Philippines there are really many drivers who have no discipline (especially jeepney drivers) and they really have no idea about the rules and regulations. That’s why you should really get your car insured because jeepney drivers can’t afford to pay you for damages. But you know what? Insurance thus have some negative side to it.

A teacher of mine shared that their car was wrecked by a jeepney (good thing they were not hurt or anything) and you know what the jeepney driver said? “Ok lang yan, may insurance naman kayo diba?” Like what? If I owned the car and the driver said that with out even apologizing first I’d make sure he pays for it, I’m going to sue (if I have the time & money that is, Lol).
