Heritage and History

Mapa ng Pilipinas from virtualtouristIt is said that you cannot know your heritage if you do not know your history. Without one, the other is lost. Without both, then the path to the future is clouded without knowing the directions from the past. As important as knowing your heritage is knowing the errors made in the past by your country to better not repeat them in the future.

Growing up in General Santos, we were taught the history and heritage of the Philippines. We were instructed on the life and doings of Jose Rizal and the other national heroes. Our history and heritage are taught so we can be the best citizens of the Philippines we could be.

So when a Filipino chooses to immigrate to another country whether it is France, Holland, Australia, USA or any other, it seems only right that we find out about the heritage and history of our new home for the same reasons we learned of our past in the Philippines.

I can’t speak of the other countries but I will give a bit of caution regarding learning the history of the USA. Be very careful of the sources you use. There are some who strive to re-write the real history of the USA and distort it to meet their goals. So I recommend really diving into the history of the USA starting with the original documents and the writings of the Founding Fathers and those who left records of their time here. Then find the historians of your choosing that are most in line with what the actual documents say.

There is much to be proud of in being a Filipino. Perhaps we can help the nations we go to aspire to a true study of their history so their real heritage is not lost.

Thank you,
