It comes as no surprise with the future economic condition of the USA that many Fil-Am couples are immigrating to the Philippines as is being reported by the Philippine government. Yes, the economic outlook for the USA is that grim. If we could, we would be doing the exact same thing.
However, we cannot as we have a duty to perform here first. I would like to hear your feedback on similar issues as I believe these cross across state lines with ease. It is about taking care of your parents-in-law during the latter part of their lives.
I know every situation is different so I will try to point out a number of variables that I can see. The easiest one would be that your mother-in-law and your father-in-law have already passed away so it is a non-issue to you. Well, that isn’t the case with us. Both of Goryo’s parents are alive and relatively well. (They are both so dear to me- I love them to death!)
No, they do not have any terminal ailments but they have their collection of issues after near 70 years of life. Some of which will require some surgical correction but that’s enough details on their health. Let us just say the German attribute of stubbornness has a tendency to complicate a few matters such as willingness to get the proper corrective surgery.
Here is the challenge in all of this. Yes, we could be selfish and leave for the Philippines but that would not be true to the Filipina way. We are going to serve them until they pass from natural causes. Yes, there is a degree of fear of the government as we hope Wisconsin never turns to nurse-assisted suicide like California has done. That is just wrong on every level. We will stand by their side until God comes to claim them and not someone playing God in the medical or political field.
We will likely face some economic hard times but how many haven’t in the Philippines? A deep recession or depression is likely good for the USA. It teaches character and how to be tough. You need to learn how to survive, thrive and be happy even when the times are tough. That is nothing new for a Filipina. It should be an interesting ride but we all do what we must out of proper service to those who have been our parents or the parents of our spouses.

I don’t live in the sates but live in Canada. That is near enough. I came to live hear with my hubby 12 years ago and now we have 2 wonderful children. We don’t have much family living here but have no intention of running away. People can’t run away from reality all the time but fortunately things don’t stay like they are forever, and the economic situation will improve again.
@Sharon - There will come a time after Goryo’s parents go to be with God that we will move back to the Philippines for education of our daughter, running businesses and for a variety of societal and culture issues. What we won’t do is runaway for economic reasons or abandoned my hubby’s parents.
Hubby prefers real happiness that he has seen while he was in the Philippines as opposed to America’s materialism.
