Yes, You can work from Home

As technology progresses many forms of jobs will be either outsourced or retooled so workers will not need to come into the office. Two of the primary reasons this trend is happening are the advances in technology and the ability to lower facility costs and absenteeism. IBM employs this technique for much of its sales and marketing staff. Only the necessary personnel come into the ‘office.’ However, this is not that common yet and life events may put you in a bind.

For example a company one half of a couple is working for goes under while the other retains their position for their employer. What do you do now to generate income? Well, if this makes you into a stay-at-home parent, you would be surprised on just how little you really need to make from home to equate to what you did in the office. The options are growing on how to do just that.

There are work-at-home jobs that can be done from home. If you have a computer, high-speed internet access and basic computer skills, online work from home has a way for just about anyone who wants to make money from the internet that requires no previous experience or start up costs. A legit company that hires people who can work from home will never ask you for a start-up fee cost.

Most stay-at-home parents, especially women who left their job because of their children, can benefit from companies like Google, Alpine Access, Live Ops Teletech and a whole lot of other companies online. Better yet, you can use a middleman such as Teleworkrecruiting that has a database of well known employers that hire people to work from home. There is a one-time membership fee (lifetime membership) to access their website. It is highly likely that this website could hook you up with work-at-home jobs in any industries. These positions are not limited to Customer Service Rep positions either. The variety is growing and includes transcription work, writing, and a wide range of positions.

Welcome to the new world powered by tech. If you do not like change, you no longer have much of a choice as the world keeps on changing rapidly. And if you’d rather take surveys, GPT and test products for free, you can do that as well (I’ll lists all the links here soon).

Hop on board and find your niche. Good luck!

Indian Summer- What is it?

Indian Summer is a term that refers to nice temperate weather during Autumn / Fall which is abnormal for the season.  The fall colors here in Wisconsin isn’t as beautiful like two years ago.  This is when we enjoy 60-80 degree temperatures outside on nice and bright sunny days when the normal would be in the 50’s and starting to really get chilly.   The leaves are changing colors and it is all around a beautiful time to enjoy the warmth while it lasts for one last time.  But today, it’s pretty cold outside and the temp went down to 30 Fahrenheit. Brrrr…

Where does the term originate?  That is much more difficult to explain.  First, Indian Summer does not refer to the country of India where true Indians live.  It has its origins from the Native American population who were mistakenly labeled Indians because the first Europeans wanted to and thought they got to India.  It would be about the same as calling a Filipino a Japanese person all because the traveler screwed up on what island they landed on.

So Indian is not really mean Indian and summer does not really mean summer.   It just seems like the same temperature as summer.  The term was made by Europeans who had settled here and was more of an insult than a good description.  But for whatever reason the name stuck.

At the same time, there are some Native American groups that will refer to themselves as American Indians to maximize a profit off of the incorrect Indian label that seems to have stuck here.   What I have learned in my years here in the USA is nothing is really all that simple and most everything contains many different meanings depending on what part of the country you are in.

What Do You Call It?

I suppose I can still be nice to the general category Coke belongs to.

In the Philippines, we call them soft drinks. There may be a few other terms depending on the dialect but generally we settle on the term soft drinks.

But is it that easy in the USA? Of course not!! One would think you might have some different terminology based on where you live and that would be true. However, that is ignoring a detail of life in USA.

Because of the pressures of income generation, people do not stay in the region where they grew up. Quite simply, they move around. Depending on the industry you work in, you may be moving around a lot such as those who specialize in heavy construction. You go where the project is.

So what does that have to do with Coke? Well, some call soft drinks by different names. Some call it soda, pop, soda pop, Coke (for all products), 7UP for all lemon lime soft drinks despite the actual brand name, cola, or soft drinks.

You can often find them labeled soft drinks because they are the opposite of hard drinks or those with alcohol in them. I have heard my hubby call them carbonated beverages but that doesn’t really work as champagne is carbonated but is also alcoholic.

All of this can lead to quite the bit of fun when a person new to the area is trying to figure out what to drink at a restaurant or just a general bit of debate on which is the right term to use.

For me, I will settle for drinking my herbal tea.

Thank you,

Anah
