Snow is Snow Right? Wrong Part II

Light snow is preferred by those who have to shovel it. It doesn’t hurt your back. However, it blows around and creates piles of snow called drifts. It is not liked by those who want to play in it as it doesn’t pack well.

Heavy snow is hated by those who have to shovel or clear it. It can cause injuries to those who manually shovel it and break machinery. It can also cave in roofs. However, it is better for playing in as it has a tendency to pack okay into snowmen and snowballs.

Powdery snow is liked best by downhill skiers as it doesn’t interfere with their skis. It isn’t that bad to shovel but if there is a wind, it blows right back into your face and down your shirt. However, it is useless for making snowmen.

Sticky snow is great for making snowmen and snowball fights. However, it is terrible on those who shovel it as it won’t come off the shovel; it jams up snow blowers and can break tree limbs and power lines.

Small granular snow is like sand. It ends up becoming crusty and often turns to ice. It is often slippery too. It isn’t that easy to shovel, useless for making snowmen and it hurts when it pelts you in the face.

Big fluffy snow is the really pretty snow that floats down gently from the sky. It usually doesn’t amount to much so shoveling is easy. It isn’t much use for making a snowman though. It is like those women who stand in front of a mirror all day. Pretty but useless.

Last is the wintry mix. This is part rain, part snow, part frozen rain called sleet. It is all misery as it jams up roads, hard to clean up, damages just about everything and heavy as all get out. This can literally put a coat of ice on your car and you won’t be able to get in the next day as it is frozen shut.

Did I know all this before moving to Wisconsin? Nope. My initial reaction to my first snowfall was “Wow, that is so pretty!!” Then getting frostbite from the bitter cold of January and the continuing supply of snow change my mind.

By February, I was complaining about when will this snow finally end and go away!

In March, I wanted to go back to the climate of the Philippines. After a few years, it gets better but winter still sucks.

So there is your introduction to the kinds of snow. Still want to come up here and experience it?

Thank you,

Anah
