Why “What’s Da Buzz?”

I have noticed an odd search for what “Da” or “Da Buzz” means or refers to. The short answer to the question someone seems to be searching Google for is a simple one. Whatsthebuzz or What’s The Buzz domain name was already taken. Try reading “What’s the buzz?’ with a slight southern accent. Since I work in a software pharmacia center all day, I hear many accents. So “da” means “the”. There you go, end of the mystery.

But I suppose I should make this entry a little bit longer.

“What’s Da Buzz?” means “What is the buzz?” or “What is the current interesting topic out on the Internet now?” Since this is my blog, that makes the whole thing mean “What is the current interesting topic out on the Internet now that caught my attention?”

Just because something sounds cool or you think might have some special meaning doesn’t mean it does. More times than not the most obvious answer is the correct answer. I’ll give you an example of something I recently learned regarding dinosaur fossils. (Baka po ma bored kayo if you are interested; just keep reading po)

Many know about and are interested in dinosaur fossils. They are unlike what we see alive today. They are a curiosity because we don’t know and likely never will know exactly what they looked like or how they lived. (Kasi wala naman talaga nakakita sa dinosaur dati so no one knows talaga; kuro-kuro lang at assuming lang.) They also have those long scientific sounding names like Tyrannosaurus Rex. But how did they get those names?

Here is the big secret. The scientist or individual who first finds a new fossil name it based on either what the skeleton looks like, the scientist’s last name, or where it was found. Then they translate as much of it as they can into Latin. It is safe to say there will not be a Johnosaurus as that just doesn’t sound scientific enough. It is that simple.

So “What is the current interesting topic out on the Internet now that caught my attention?” is just too long for a domain name and doesn’t sound as cool as “What’s Da Buzz?” Just like “tyrant lizard king” doesn’t sound as scientific as Tyrannosaurus Rex. But in both cases both phrases mean the same thing.

Okay, I’m done for now. Enjoy your week!

Anah
