As I introduced back on August 26th of last year, Medical Tourism was starting to get noticed. Then later on back on May 6th of this year in the article Insurance Issues I went into greater detail.
Well the topic of medical tourism has finally started to hit the mainstream media as seen in this MSNBC article Hip Surgery? Insurance May Pay. So it is getting the attention of many now for good reason.
Is it getting the attention because of affordability? Partially, the author of the article made an attempt at a balanced piece of journalism but made a few intentional or unintentional blunders. You can tell the intent of an author when you read the closing of a piece which is normally made to reinforce the main idea of a topic. In the MSNBC piece, there is an attempt at portraying medical tourism as having a potential future doomsday and only being for the rich.
When you read the opinion of those in opposition to medical tourism, one must look at the motivations they may have for writing it. Most notably the opposition happens to be the medical doctors from the USA who would lose control of their monopoly and profit margins. A primary scare tactic is to make others scared of flying and health care options. Most individuals who would consider medical tourism have already traveled to other countries and done their research. We know the cautions on flying and ailments. This is nothing new but it is made out to be a terrible thing. Please, we are not idiots.
The best argument they have is how bad the “American traveling elite” are taking away valuable resources from those very poor and very needy here. It is called capitalism (pribadong business) not socialism or communism. Deal with it.
