Head to Bed

[ad#usethis]

The title is such a short phrase but loaded with many different meanings.

Head in the phrase means “to go” but it also means the top person in charge and the first person in a line. However, head also refers to what holds our face, hair and ears. Shall I go on or shall we face the reality of the joys of the English language by showing a good face to the face of all who face us face to face?

Would you believe that there are 85 different definitions for the word head in the English language which you have to know exactly what is meant based on how it is used in phrases or with other select words? Try translating that.

Luckily the word “to” is fairly short with few definitions but there are a number of different spellings each with a different set of meanings. Using it in an impossible sentence is actually easy. How do you spell to / too / two? There is no way to have a written answer as the question doesn’t give you a hint of which definition when it is asked of you verbally.

Lastly, there is the word “bed.” Just how many definitions does the word bed have? Take a wild guess. Did you think it was only 1 definition? Of course it couldn’t be that simple. Maybe you can figure out 5 or ten definitions for the word bed. It may come as a surprise that there are 44 different definitions for the simple word “bed.”

But in this case, “head to bed” means that I am going to sleep now. All this English language exercise has worn my head out.
