Ever wonder about your family’s health history? On my side of family, there were 3 deaths in my dad’s side (2 were health related issues, 1 was childbirth) and just recently in my mother’s side of family, my 39 year old uncle died of lung cancer. I know there are times that we don’t want to hear another single world about our father’s chest pain, your brother or sister’s arthritic knee, or your mother’s high insulin level. But do you know that there are good reasons to really watch out for those issues? Specifically, the reason is Your Family’s Health History.
My Bana’s Dad had a massive heart attacked in 2001 and he almost died. We sometimes forget how to eat healthy until life changing events happen in our lives or your spouse got seriously ill. We finally start evaluating what we eat. So it is not a bad idea to start getting that information on the health of our extended family members. You can start by asking about the chronic conditions that affected your aunts and uncles, your grandparents and even nephews, nieces and cousins. I have not started compiling our family medical history yet but in the back of my mind, I know I should start doing it.
Knowing our family medical history will give us insight into the various diseases or conditions that are common in our family. It is also helpful for our physician in diagnosing a medical condition, determining what set of medical tests to run, and what preventative measures to take. List all the major diseases such as stroke, cancer, heart disease, depression, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, deafness and obesity. Don’t forget to find out the age the conditions were diagnosed and if it was treated successfully. According to Mayo Clinic, allergies, migraines, asthma and frequent colds are other conditions that our families may share as well as problems with miscarriages, infertility, learning disabilities and birth defects.
Start now and you’ll be thankful.
Live well,
Anah
